Red Cross: aid reaches 220,000 cyclone victims in Myanmar GENEVA: The international Red Cross says relief workers have reached 220,000 cyclone victims in Myanmar, far short of the estimated 1.9 million people affected by the storm. The Red Cross says one-third of those victims have been reached by its volunteers, and the rest have been provided with aid from other agencies and Myanmar's government. Officials have said the estimate of those affected by the storm last weekend includes 1 million people made homeless and others who were injured or left at risk of disease or hunger. Michael Annear, the disaster coordinator for the International
Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Myanmar, said
Friday that it's crucial to get shelter and drinking water to the storm
victims as soon as possible. |
