HEDGEHOG RESCUE
Today I rescued a hedgehog. Well yesterday..but today the Vet told me it was better.
I woke up yesterday..and in the early morning sun, there it was,the adult hedgehog not moving ,unable to move but breathing. It looked as though it was on its last legs and about to pass on.I decided ,as it is in the wild,to leave it in peace.
I went later and it was still there. When I bent in close it picked its head ever so slightly and turned and looked at me. Just as you,I or a puppy or anyone would.Little brown eyes.
A short time later we took it to the vet and left it there.I thought about it a lot during the day and in the evening.I said a prayer for it. I did some research on the internet.Who was this hedgehog looking at me! Today I received a call to say it was much better and did well overnight. It was given antibiotics . Soon I pick it up to release it back into the wild.
Hedgehogs are common around these parts.Sadly they often get run over.Hedgehogs eat insects and all manner of things. They are as clean as any other mammel in spite of the fact some like to say they are not. They don't carry any more bugs then any other mammal. There are 16 kinds of hedgehog found through parts of Europe,Asia,Africa and New Zealand. There are no living species native to North America and those in New Zealand are introduced. Hedgehogs have changed little over the last 15 million years. Like many of the first mammals they have adapted to a nocturnal, insectivorous way of life.I don't have a photo of my hedgehog, but I hope these photos suffice for those who do not see them often.I hope my hedgehog stays safe in the wild. It's worth rescuing living things, and at least trying...rather than perhaps just putting them down.(I say the same of humans too.).I often wonder we don't take enough care...of even common animals.Thank you for a wonderful world.
